Last night E and I went to a global warming meeting at St.
Marks Catholic Church. The meeting focused not on whether or not global warming
was happening, but on what we can do individually to help lower the amount of pollution out there. Some of the information we learned are as follows:
Energy conversation – by installing compact florescent light
bulbs, calking windows and doors, and using low energy appliances, one can lower
your heating/cooling bill by 20 to 50%.
Plus, the less electric you use, the less energy needs to be produced by
coal burning power plants (which produces the majority of the US electricity)
Geothermal Cooling – the ground outside stays at a content temperature
year round (once you go past the frost range). By using a network of pipes, you
can use this fact to cool water which will they cool your house. It is a very cool (pun intended) system. =)
We also had the opportunity to meet some nice people who are
working to in the Catholic Social Justice Field to help people affected by
global warming. Another bonus was meeting some folks we original met at the
Idaho Environmental Summit last month. We are slowly building a network of
churches in the Treasure
Valley who are interesting
in touching lives through the environment.
** Note: to though readers who are getting scared at me talking
about the environment, please note that I am not a ‘tree hugger’. There are thousands of millions of people out
there who may NEVER hear about God, the Maker of Everything, but care about
environment. My heart is to reach these people for the Kingdom as well as to
help reduce the amount of pollution in the world. (besides, it helps my bottom
line) =) [oh wait, can I say that?]
